COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina lawmakers are trying to ease penalties for people who cruise highways sipping on liquor after having made it tougher to buy energy-packed alcoholic drinks.
Legislators want to end an automatic, six-month driver's license suspension for people convicted of or pleading guilty to having open containers of liquor in their car. Proponents say that measure is a throwback to moonshining laws.
A House panel adopted the change last week as the entire House approved a bill that bans retail sales of drinks like Four Loco.
Laura Hudson is an advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving and crime victims in the Statehouse. She said she'll try to stop the legislation when it comes up for debate Tuesday.
