AIKEN, S.C. (AP) -- Federal officials are holding a science competition for high school students from across South Carolina.

The U.S. Department of Energy is hosting a science bowl Saturday at the University of South Carolina-Aiken.

Teams from across the state are expected to participate in the competition organized by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, the primary company operating at the Savannah River Site.

The site near Aiken is managed by the U.S. Department of Energy. It once produced plutonium and tritium for atomic bombs, but work there is now focused mostly on research and cleaning up areas of the site contaminated during weapons production.

Winners from the regional competition go on to compete at the national level later this year.
