COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Public charter schools in South Carolina would be funded at the same level as traditional public schools under a bill making its way through the House Education Committee.
If passed by the full House, the bill would allow state and federal education dollars to follow students from traditional schools to public charter schools.
Legislators and parents behind the measure met Wednesday at the State House to voice their support.
State Superintendent of Education Mick Zais says the bill would give parents more choices.
"I believe public charter schools can transform education in South Carolina, because they are focused entirely on student achievement and the needs of meeting individual students," Zais says.
Zais says public charter schools that don't live up to their charter will close. He says several charter schools in South Carolina already have.
