COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- It's now up to a federal jury to determine if a former Kershaw County sheriff's deputy charged with beating a handcuffed detainee violated the man's civil rights.
Jurors began deliberating late Wednesday morning in the case of 51-year-old Oddie Tribble.
Tribble was fired in August after video surfaced of him beating a handcuffed man dozens of times with a metal baton, breaking his leg.
Tribble testified that inmate Charles Shelley was drunk and belligerent and was making threats against Tribble's family. Prosecutors said in closing arguments Tuesday that Tribble was angry and used unjustified force against the man.
Tribble could face up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines if he is convicted.
