CHARLOTTE (WACH) -- Tens of thousands of Democrats will descend upon Charlotte in 2012. The Queen City won the hosting honors for the 46th Democratic National Convention next September.
First Lady Michelle Obama announced the decision Tuesday pointing to the city's qualities.
"Charlotte is a city marked by its southern charm, warm hospitality, and an "up by the bootstraps" mentality that has propelled the city forward as one of the fastest-growing in the South," she said. "Vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity, the Queen City is home to innovative, hardworking folks with big hearts and open minds. And of course, great barbecue."
With all of the attention and visitors, the convention is sure to pump up the city's economy.
The convention starts September 3, 2011.
Charlotte entered the running over a year ago. St. Louis, Cleveland and Minneapolis were also contenders.
