Sumter police officer dies in crash

A Sumter police officer has died following a car crash on Highway 521 North in Sumter County.

39-year old Charles Nesbitt, Jr. died from injuries suffered in that crash.

Officials say Nesbitt and another officer, patrolman James Cox, were on duty and travelling in a patrol car.  There was a head-on collision with an SUV travelling in the opposite direction.

According to the Sumter Police Department, patrolman Cox was treated for his injuries.  No word yet on the status of the SUV driver.

The Highway Patrol MAIT team is investigating the crash.

Nesbitt was a 10-year veteran of the Sumter Police Department.
