GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) -- An animal rescue organization is trying to find out who dumped three puppies in a drainpipe in Georgetown.
Ten-year-old Michael Hardwick was walking with a friend when they heard the month-old puppies squealing in a stormwater pipe in Georgetown on Sunday. Michael says the pups were in a bag in the back of the pipe.
He and the friend took the dogs to his grandmother's house, cleaned them up and gave them some milk.
A volunteer with Coastal Animal Rescue in Murrells Inlet is watching the dogs now. Officials hope they will be adopted. Michael says his family would like to keep one of the dogs.
Coastal Animal Rescue is offering a $1,000 reward to anyone who can tell them who dumped the dogs. People convicted of animal cruelty in Georgetown County can face a fine of up to $500 or 30 days in jail.
