CHARLESTON (WACH) -- An unknown helicopter over the South Carolina coast was intercepted by F-16 jets Wednesday morning.
Officials say the civilian chopper was entering U.S. airspace around 9 a.m. without communication to air traffic control.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command dispatched two fighter jets from the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter.
The Air Force pilots instructed the crew of the helicopter using hand motions to contact air traffic control.
According to the FAA, all aircraft entering domestic U.S. airspace must give identification before arriving.
