COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The former husband of Susan Smith says he understands why Oprah Winfrey would want to interview his ex-wife, but he wouldn't want the woman who killed his two young sons to get any more time in the spotlight.

David Smith spoke Tuesday at a training workshop in Columbia for social workers, prosecutors, paramedics and law enforcement officers on handling and preventing child deaths.

Susan Smith is serving a life sentence after being convicted of killing the couple's sons, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex, when she left them strapped in their car seats and let her car roll into a lake in 1994.

Recently, Winfrey said Susan Smith was one interview she had wanted, but had been unable to get. Winfrey has interviewed David Smith on her popular talk show.
