COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A 23-year-old South Carolina inmate has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for threatening to kill two prosecutors.
U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles says Jermaine Nelson of Pelzer was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Anderson. He pleaded guilty to the charges in July.
Nelson was charged last year with mailing threatening letters to then-solicitor Trey Gowdy and deputy solicitor Ryan McCarty. Their judicial circuit covers Spartanburg and Cherokee counties.
Nelson began serving a 15-year sentence for burglary at maximum security McCormick Correctional Institution in 2006. Prosecutors say the letters were sent from prison.
Gowdy has since been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He replaces outgoing Rep. Bob Inglis.
