COLUMBIA (WACH) -- One person is dead after a car-train collision Wednesday evening in Richland County.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says 33-year-old Lazaro Noriega Lopez died at the scene on Wolfe Road in Gadsden around 7 p.m.

According to Lance Corporal Josef Robinson of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Lopez was driving a 1998 Plymouth van and tried to cross the railroad tracks, but did not yield to the train.

Robinson says Lopez was not wearing a seatbelt and died from multi-trauma.  He was the only person in the vehicle.

Toxicology tests are pending and the Highway Patrol continues their investigation.
