COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Top legislative leaders support a small South Carolina town suing the governor over a plan to take money allocated for rural water and sewer systems to instead pay for the state's budget oversight agency.
Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Hugh Leatherman say in court documents that Gov. Mark Sanford should not have vetoed the $29 million budget for the board that oversees key state operations.
The Republicans also say Sanford should not have taken from the rural account to help fund the board.
Attorneys for the town of Timmonsville sued this summer, asking the state Supreme Court to overturn Sanford's plans. The state Supreme Court is set to hear arguments Friday and will likely issue their decision in several months.
