WASHINGTON (AP) -- The University of South Carolina has agreed with the Justice Department to revise campus policies to produce more timely and effective responses when students complain of discrimination and harassment by other students.
The Justice Department says the university will hire a consultant to help revise its policies in time for the start of the 2011-2012 school year. Administrators, faculty and students will be trained in the new policies in the 2012 spring semester.
A report of race discrimination on campus prompted the department to examine university policies and practices for handling such complaints.
Assistant U.S. Attorney General Thomas Perez praised the university for entering into the agreement. Perez says that public institutions must respond quickly and effectively to allegations of discrimination and harassment.
