COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- State auditors say decisions by the South Carolina State Fire Marshal on the replacement of fire extinguishers caused thousands of dollars in unnecessary costs.
The Legislative Audit Council said in a report released Wednesday that the Office of the State Fire Marshal had been requiring businesses to replace fire extinguishers earlier than necessary. Auditors say that decision meant those businesses spent thousands of dollars buying new extinguishers before they were needed.
Auditors recommended that the fire marshal keep extinguishers in use until the devices can't be serviced any more. They also said the office should keep better records.
Fire Marshal John Reich told auditors that many of the recommendations already have been implemented.
