CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- More than 100 cadets from The Citadel are spending Election Day helping out in Lowcountry communities.

Officials from the military college say the cadets will be in Charleston and Orangeburg on Tuesday to perform community service as part of the school's leadership development program.

The Arland D. Williams Heroism Day is named for a Citadel class of 1957 graduate who died in 1982 in the icy waters of the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., after a plane crash dumped several passengers in the river. Williams helped several other passengers get to a rescue line, but died before rescuers could get to him.

About 160 cadets are expected to perform 1,200 hours of community service ranging from home repairs and construction to helping at homeless shelters and soup kitchens.
