COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The Democrat trying to unseat South Carolina's Republican secretary of state says she thinks the office isn't visible enough to the public.

Marjorie Johnson of Columbia is trying to replace Mark Hammond of Spartanburg, who says he's worked to make it easier for the public to use his office's administrative functions by updating its online access.

The secretary of state files documents for businesses and corporations, regulates charitable organizations and commissions notaries public. The office also registers trademarks and acts as the state's cable franchise authority.

It is also known for its annual "Scrooges and Angels" list, which helps charitable givers learn about how charities spend what they collect.
