COLUMBIA (WACH) -- A big win Saturday turned into a tragedy for two Gamecock fans.
According to Monique Mack with the Richland County Sheriff's Department, a truck parked at a tailgating site on Shop Road near Williams-Brice Stadium was trying to merge into traffic after the football game.
Curtis Simms, 25, of Columbia was in that truck. Authorities say he and a passenger of another vehicle got into an argument. The fight escalated into a physical altercation between the men on the side of the road.
During the incident, 20-year-old Allen Gasque of Marion fell to the ground.
“At the same time he was falling to the ground, the vehicle the victim was in tried to pull to the side of the road,” says Mack. “Unfortunately, our victim got caught under the tire of the vehicle.”
Gasque was transported to Palmetto Health Richland, where he was pronounced dead.
“We haven't had a lot of incidents where road rage has led to someone's death,” Mack says.
Authorities are still trying to figure out how Gasque ended up on ground, whether he fell or was pushed.
At this time, Simms is charged with aggravated breach of peace, but additional charges could be filed.
The Richland County Sheriff's Department is asking if anyone that may have witnessed the incident to call the department's investigation division at (803) 576-3056.
