COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The Republican hoping to replace U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett in South Carolina's third district says Social Security should be cut off for children being born today.
But Democratic candidate Jane Dyer says Jeff Duncan's proposal is a terrible idea that will push the middle class into a lower economic status.
The two made their comments in a debate taped Tuesday for airing on South Carolina Educational Television on Sunday at 1 p.m. as part of its debate series.
Duncan says Social Security should be phased out over the next 60 years to bring America out of debt. Dyer says a way must be found to make the program work.
The two candidates also differ on extending tax cuts enacted under President Bush, term limits and immigration.
