WALTERBORO, S.C. (AP) -- The small town of Walterboro is marking a firefighting tradition which dates back to the 1800s.

On Saturday, the town marks 140 years of service by its fire department. The observance also marks the fire department's contributions, honors three retired Walterboro fire chiefs and serves as the beginning of fire protection month.

Firefighters will also be assembling bicycles for local children as part of the department's work with the Little Red Dog Foundation.

The foundation provides special three-wheeled bikes for people who have physical conditions that keep them from riding ordinary bicycles.
