ORANGEBURG, SC (WACH) -- Despite dreary weather, mourners from all across the state took time out to visit Simmons funeral home to pay their respects to Sheriff Larry Williams.

Marline Hampton, an Orangeburg resident, was just one of the many to give a final goodbye.  "Larry's a great man and I know he's going to be greatly missed in Orangeburg," Hampton said.

Sheriff Larry Williams, elected in 2000, passed away September 21 after being hospitalized for an undisclosed illness.  His family requested his cause his cause of death not be released.

Hampton said she's not  concerned with how he died but with how he lived.  "Larry got elected sheriff and since then I've seen the crime rate go down a whole lot," she said.

Hampton said she hopes his legacy continues. "A lot of things have changed when he got into office and I hope they stay that way.  He's really going to be missed.

Memorials for sheriff can be made to the Larry D. Williams Scholarship Fund, in care of the sheriff's department at South Carolina Federal Credit Union, 1174 Boulevard St., Orangeburg or mailed to South Carolina Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 190012, North Charleston, S.C., 29419-9012.
