CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- It's time for South Carolina to get a sprucing up.

Thousands of residents are expected to participate the 22nd Annual Beach and River Sweep on Saturday.

The event, sponsored by the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium and the state Department of Natural Resources, is considered the largest one-day litter cleanup of the state's waterfronts.

Last year, more than 4,500 volunteers removed 45.5 tons of debris.

Since the event started more than two decades ago, more than 1,000 tons of litter and debris has been collected.
