ORANGEBURG (WACH, AP) -- A judge has denied bond for a South Carolina mother accused of suffocating her two young sons, then staging an accident by steering her car into a river with their bodies strapped inside.

After a brief recess, Circuit Judge Edgar Dickson agreed with prosecutors Monday that 29-year-old Shaquan Duley could be a threat to her remaining child, a 5-year-old girl.

Duley's attorney requested bond to be set at $25,000 to $50,000.  Prosecutors argued the case may be a capital case, so no bond should set.

Authorities say Duley has confessed to suffocating 2-year-old Devean Duley and 18-month-old Ja'Van Duley, then strapping them into their car seats and driving into a river.

Duley is charged with two counts of murder. Prosecutors have not said if they will seek the death penalty.

Her attorney said Monday that Duley cut her wrists with a boxcutter and intended to drown in the river but bailed out of the sinking car.

Duley and her family arrived at the courthouse dressed in black.  Her mother, father, sister and two pastors spoke on her behalf at the hearing along with a psychiatrist who said she wasn't a flight risk or a threat to herself or others.
