HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- Planners on Hilton Head Island are looking for ways to make the South Carolina town a bit more pedestrian friendly.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports town council voted Tuesday to negotiate with the state Transportation Department to take over sections of three state roads. The idea is to make it easier for pedestrians near the beach.

The town plans to narrow traffic lanes, reduce speeds, add lighting and extend curbs to slow traffic.

There also are plans to create small plazas near a traffic circle with planters and benches to make the area more welcoming to pedestrians.
