COLUMBIA (WACH) -- With a self-imposed deadline of September 30, Columbia City Council discussed two options: pursue a management contract with Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott or hire a new police chief.

“Our goal is to make sure we do everything we can to fight crime and create safer communities,” said Mayor Steve Benjamin.

Following the last of five public meetings on the proposal, council members Thursday reviewed priorities for funding.  At the top of their list was public safety.

“I think we have had a great opportunity to hear from our citizens and now we have got to make some decisions,” said Councilwoman Belinda Gergel.

If approved, the Columbia Police Department would no longer be under the direction of a chief, hired by the city manager.  Instead, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott would oversee the force.

The issue has received mixed reaction from residents.  Some believe they won't get adequate service if the sheriff takes over the department, and others see it as a cost-saving measure; but Councilwoman Leona Plaugh has a different point of view.

“I have never viewed that contract as cost-savings, but rather as an opportunity to do some shifting of funds, so that you put more officers out in the community,” Plaugh said.

City council will continue to discuss the matter, which Mayor Benjamin believes is an opportunity for the city to explore working closer with the county.
