COLUMBIA (WACH) -- City of Columbia, City Year and Richland One officials come together to announce a major grant for a new dropout prevention program.
During a press conference Tuesday morning, City Year officials announced a new grant funded program, Diplomas Now.
"This symbol can not be about an organization, it needs to be a set of ideals, ideals about a issue, a issue that is facing all of us that we have to stand up for in columbia," says Elliott Epps executive director of City Year, Columbia.
The program focuses on drop out prevention and will be implemented in high schools in Richland One School District.
C.A. Johnson has been selected as a model site for the new program.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at the close of the press conference in honor of the new City Year logo.
Mayor Steve Benjamin also acknowledged the return of the City Year logo to Main Street.
"I'm so proud to be here for this announcement today...now lets roll up our sleeves and ask ourselves certain questions, what am i doing to help, what can i do better, what can i do more of, who can i partner with, our city schools are the battle grounds for our city's future," say Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin.
The logo had previously been removed from a location at the intersection of Main and Hampton Streets, due to the Main Street Streetscaping project. The new City Year logo has now been painted at the intersection of Main and Laurel Streets.
