PICKENS, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to the shooting death of his roommate last year.

The Greenville News reported that 51-year-old Gary Clinton Mayfield entered the plea in court in Pickens on Monday.

Prosecutors say Mayfield and Claude Julius Burrell got into an argument at their home in Pickens County in May 2009.

Prosecutor Chris Newton says Mayfield got Burrell's gun, loaded it and shot Burrell in the head.

Mayfield apologized in court, calling Burrell his best friend.
