COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Officials say mold appears to be responsible for illnesses a South Carolina magistrate and his staff have suffered.

The State newspaper reported Tuesday it obtained a report on a Richland County magistrate's office which shows mold in the building. The Dentsville magistrate's office was closed Friday and moved downtown while the building is cleaned.

Magistrate Phil Newsom says he and two other employees have been taken to a hospital by ambulance in the past two years because of medical problems at work.

The report says employees have suffered strokes, allergies and rashes.

Building owners Bill Theus and Walter Taylor say they are working on air distribution problems and are having the building cleaned.

Theus says other tenants in the building have not reported mold problems.
