WEST COLUMBIA (WACH) -- There's a new hotel in town and it's the first of its kind.
The Holiday Inn and Suites Columbia Airport was recognized Thursday for being eco-friendly.
West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton and other local officials attended the ribbon cutting ceremony.
It's the first hotel in the state that's eco-room and eco-suite certified.
The recognition comes for its efforts to keep the earth healthy by encouraging guests to participate in green initiative.
"It's very important that investors step up and realize the necessity of going green with their money," Horton explains. "But it's certainly good for the environment, it's good for the citizens of West Columbia."
The hotel has also been honored with the South Carolina Green Hospitality Alliance's Three Palmetto Certification.
