COLUMBIA (WACH) -- More relief is on the way for unemployed South Carolina Homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages.
The U.S. Department of Treasury announced an additional $58 million to help our state's hardest hit homeowners.
South Carolina housing officials say they'll start taking applications from unemployed homeowners in October to decide how to distribute the funds.
Clayton Ingram with South Carolina Housing says this is not a bailout and only applies for "responsible borrowers" who've found themselves in a default or foreclosure due to circumstances beyond their control.
"Because of unemployment, because of sickness, their financial situation has decayed that just now they are unable to continue paying their mortgage," Ingram explains. "This will allow them to stay in their homes, stay in their neighborhoods until such time that they have re-employment that will allow them to become self sufficient."
Officials with the treasury say South Carolina is one of 16 states selected for the additional funding due to high sustained unemployment with rates at or above the national average for the past 12 months.
