COLUMBIA (WACH) -- According to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control, South Carolina's 2008 infant mortality rate is eight for every 1,000 live births.
That's down six percent compared to 2007's rate of 8.5 deaths.
DHEC officials also say partnerships with organizations such as the March of Dimes have helped.
"We're all working with them, working together to fund and facilitate and lead programs for mothers to help them learn ways to become more healthy, to find ways to protect their unborn baby," says Adam Myrick of DHEC.
DHEC officials say in 2008 they saw a decrease in infants born at low birth weights and a decrease in infants born premature compared to the previous year.
