HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Hilton Head Island and Beaufort County could provide a total of $2 million for the Heritage PGA Tour tournament, which is without a corporate sponsor.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported Wednesday both the town and the county councils are expected to consider providing grants if a title sponsor isn't found.

Last spring's tournament was the final one sponsored by Verizon.

Hilton Head Island Mayor Tom Peeples says the town could come up with $1 million from a general reserve account. County Council Chairman Weston Newton says there has been no formal request, but $1 million has been suggested.

A recent study found last April's Verizon Heritage brought in nearly $82 million to the town and regional economy.
