COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Residents in District II went to the polls Tuesday to decide who will represent them on city council.

Polls closed at 7 p.m. and votes are currently being tallied.

Brian DeQuincey Newman and Puff Howard both hope to fill former Councilman E.W. Cromartie's vacant seat.

Earlier this month, Newman and Howard picked up the most votes in a special election but neither won a majority.

While experts predicted low voter turnout, some voters say it's their civic duty to cast their ballot.

"It could be raining, thundering, sunny, cold," says voter Quadrey Reeves.  "It shouldn't stop me from coming out to vote because a voteless person is a hopeless person."
