GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's junior U.S. Senator says he has no plans to challenge Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky as leader of Senate Republicans.

U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint told The Greenville News that he would not rule out accepting a leadership position in the Senate, but says he doesn't plan to challenge McConnell for the top GOP spot.

DeMint says he expects 10 to 15 new conservatives to be elected to the Senate this year and he'll see what happens with leadership positions.

DeMint has endorsed and raised money for a number of conservative candidates.

That includes the opponent of a man McConnell was backing for Kentucky's other U.S. Senate seat. DeMint's choice, Rand Paul, won the primary.

But DeMint he's working with McConnell to make sure conservatives are elected to the Senate.
