Panel Republicans to request delay in Kagan vote

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee are expected to request a one-week delay before a panel vote on Elena Kagan, President Barack Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court.

Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., has said he would grant such a request.

That would push a committee vote to next week, leaving Kagan on track to win Senate confirmation before the Senate leaves in early August for a monthlong break. It also gives her time to take her seat before the court begins a new term this fall.

Kagan has served as solicitor general. She would succeed retiring Justice John Paul Stevens and become the fourth woman on the court. She'd also be the third sitting female justice.

Democrats have more than enough votes to confirm her.
