MYRTLE BEACH (AP) -- The state environmental agency wants to review building along the South Carolina coast, worried that too many buildings are being constructed too close to the beach.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control's governing board on Thursday voted to set up a panel to review beachfront development laws.
The agency hopes to come up with proposals for state law makers to consider in 2012.
DHEC says a 1988 law designed to protect the beaches from development needs to be reviewed.
Officials say buildings constructed too close to the ocean are at risk of hurricane damage and contribute to beach erosion.
