FORT CAMPBELL, KY -- The military says a Fort Campbell soldier was killed when his patrol encountered an explosive device in Afghanistan, continuing a deadly period for those serving from the post.
Pfc. David A. Jefferson of Philadelphia was an Army Combat Medic assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. The 23-year-old entered the Army in July 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2009.
According to officials, 21 soldiers from Fort Campbell were killed in Afghanistan last month.
Jefferson's awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification: M4, expert.
Jefferson is survived by his wife, Darniece T. Melton-Jefferson; a son, Ian of Philadelphia; and his father, James M. Lyles of Columbia, S.C.
