COLUMBIA (WACH) -- According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, more than 800 people die on South Carolina Highways each year, but that number could be larger it weren't for blood donation.

Wednesday afternoon at the Fuddruckers on Bush River Road, people lined up to donate blood for the 4th annual Families of Highway Fatalities Blood Drive.

Shirley Hastings lost her son Steven seven years ago on a South Carolina Highway and now is an advocate for blood donation.

"There's a world wide shortage of blood and people just don't understand how important it is to give and without it, some people will not live," Hastings says.

If you didn't make it to this blood drive, you can still roll up your sleeves for our fifth annual Drive for Live on July 14.

WACH Fox is teaming up with New 92 and Flashback 94.3 at the Village at Sandhill.  It runs from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
