TRAVELERS REST -- Authorities say an 87-year-old driver had died after his car was hit by a police cruiser trying to chase down a dirt bike in northern South Carolina.

Investigators told WYFF-TV that the Travelers Rest police officer had just turned around to follow the dirt dike Saturday afternoon when witnesses said the car driven by 87-year-old Thomas Howard pulled out in front of the cruiser.

Authorities say Howard was ejected for the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
