NEWBERRY COUNTY (WACH) -- A murder suspect is in custody following a standoff with deputies in Newberry County.

Nineteen-year-old Gregory Ashton Collins was arrested and charged with murder. 

According to the Sheriff's Department, a driver found the 30-year-old Anthony Hill in the roadway around 4:30 Wednesday morning near Pomaria-Garmany Elementary, and called the authorities.

Major Todd Johnson says deputies found forensic evidence at the scene that lead them to the Collins' house in the Orchard Park Trailer Park.

Once arriving at the suspects house, about 9 miles from where the body was found, deputies say Collins refused to come out of his house, leading to a standoff.

Johnson says tear gas was eventually shot into the house, and Collins then surrendered to deputies.

Investigators say after Hill was shot and killed, his body was tied to the back of a vehicle and dragged ten miles down the road.

Officials are treating the incident as a hate crime.  More charges are expected to be filed.

Governor Mark Sanford issued a statement commending officials for quick response.

“In light of the tragic news coming from Newberry County today, I want to commend Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster and others in law enforcement for responding quickly and decisively to this most troubling situation.  Our office would ask for people’s thoughts and prayers for the family of the victim of this horrendous crime," Sanford said.
