WALTERBORO (AP) -- South Carolina's State Law Enforcement Division is opening a permanent office in one county to help fight ongoing street violence.

SLED Chief Reggie Lloyd and local law enforcement officials attend an open house at the Colleton County office in Walterboro on Wednesday.

The county, wracked in recent months by a surge in gun violence, is paying for the office space. The county, about an hour west of Charleston, has suffered a recent surge in gun violence.

Last November, three people, including a 20-month old toddler, were killed in a drive-by shooting that wounded six others. Then in January, a woman was hit in the hand and head in another drive-by shooting.

Recently, area ministers have given out Walmart gift cards in exchange for guns.
