(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. Two of the Democrats in the race for South Carolina governor say improving public education involves overhauling school funding and increasing teacher pay. State Sen. Robert Ford of Charleston takes a different course.

State schools Superintendent Jim Rex says tax reform could lead to full-day schooling for all 4-year-olds statewide. State Sen. Vincent Sheheen wants to reduce teacher paperwork and re-evaluate the amount of standardized testing. Ford is the lone Democrat who wants to help parents afford private school tuition.

The candidates offered their thoughts during a series of interviews with The Associated Press. Four Republicans are running.

Ford's campaign hinges almost entirely on the state making money by bringing back video poker.
