COLUMBIA -- A new sculpture is sprucing up the Midlands.

The group Keep the Midlands Beautiful unveiled the sculpture at the Riverfront Park off Laurel Street Thursday.

Local artist Greg Fitzpatrick created it.  He calls the work Eternal Spring.

Organizers say the sculpture represents the organizations 20th anniversary of serving in the Midlands.

"If we work hard to preserve this beautiful community, that it will be better left when we are gone than we found it," explains Debbie Summers, Lexington County Council Chair.  "And that's a lot to think about, whether it's air or water or the beauty things, we need to leave it better than we found it."

Keep the Midlands Beautiful promotes litter prevention, recycling and beautiful projects.
