COLUMBIA -- Columbia city officials blocked off a section of roadway and evacuated the Matthew J. Perry Federal Courthouse on Richland Street due to a bomb scare Wednesday afternoon.

The City of Columbia Homeland Security Bomb Squad sent in a robot to x-ray a suspicious package in the back of the building.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says the package turned out to be computer parts.

An employee saw a box with wires sticking out and called 911.

"Some people think our reaction might have been overkill, but with every thought of threats going on, we have to take precautions in every way, shape and form," Jenkins said.

Streets were opened and people were let back into the building after given the all clear.
