COLUMBIA -- When firefighters respond to a blaze, getting the people inside out is the most important thing.
But crews also work to rescue our four legged friends and WACH Fox wants to help out that cause.
"The Columbia Fire Department responds to over 600 structure fires every year," Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says.
And we're calling in some backup too. We're teaming up with Columbia and Richland County Fire Departments and Four Paws Animal Clinic to buy pet oxygen masks.
They need $3,000 to supply each truck with the masks.
According to one Midlands vet, these life saving devices will make a tremendous difference.
"Dogs and cats are pretty much considered like small children so the degree of smoke inhalation that would affect a small child is also going to effect your pet," says Dr. Nori Warren.
To help out, you can donate online or at Four Paws Animal Clinic, WACH Fox and any city of Columbia Fire Department.
