COLUMBIA (AP) -- South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster has settled a dispute with Duke Energy that he thinks will help in a larger dispute with North Carolina over water use.

The State newspaper reported Friday that McMaster and the Charlotte utility have settled a dispute over water use on the Catawba River, which runs through both states.

The newspaper says the settlement shows Duke will maintain water flow in the river below Lake Wylie and will improve oxygen levels.

McMaster will drop his opposition to Duke's permits for federally license dams on the Catawba-Wateree river system.

McMaster has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to equally divide use of the river between the two states to protect South Carolina from plans by two North Carolina cities to withdraw more water.
