DENTSVILLE -- A proposal to bring a high stakes Indian bingo operation to Richland County has been shot down.

Councilman Jim Manning, who was originally for the idea of bringing the Catawba Indian facility to Decker Boulevard, requested to remove consideration from the Richland County Council agenda.

This comes after Manning held a community meeting to hear public opinion Monday night.

There is a state law that allows the Catawbas to operate a bingo hall outside the reservation, but this isn't the first time the tribe has met opposition to setting up a bingo parlor.

The recent proposal in Dentsville follows the tribe's unsuccessful attempts to open bingo halls in North Myrtle Beach, Santee, Orangeburg and Rock Hill.
