Officials: Smoking material caused Lexington fire

LEXINGTON -- Fire officials say discarded smoking material caused the massive fire at the Waterway Apartments in Lexington.

In all, 16 apartment units were destroyed by the fire and two other buildings were damaged in the fire.

No one was injured in the fire, but many were left homeless.

Onlookers say a plume of smoke could be seen eight miles away at the time of the blaze.

Lexington County Fire Service and Irmo Fire Service responded.  Lexington EMS and Lexington Police assisted firefighters.
