COLUMBIA (AP) -- The cash race has tightened for Republican gubernatorial hopefuls in South Carolina.
A review of campaign finance reports on Monday shows that Attorney General Henry McMaster raised $430,078 in cash for his primary bid during the second quarter. Trailing closely were Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer's $397,978 and U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett $393,161.
McMaster's campaign said it felt good to be gaining financial ground and political momentum in the run-up to the June 8 primary.
Barrett had the most cash remaining for the contest with $1.6 million with McMaster and Bauer having $1.4 million.
State Rep. Nikki Haley had $530,023 on hand. Furman University political scientist Danielle Vinson said that's enough for Haley to mount a credible campaign.
