COLUMBIA -- South Carolinians are cashing in on some big savings.

It's been one week since the Cash for Appliances program went into effect.

It's a multi-million dollar effort to boost the economy and reduce emission.  And it's paying off here in the Midlands.

Local residents are using rebates from $50 to $500 to buy more energy efficient appliances.

Local retailers say the rebate incentive is a win-win for both customers and businesses.

"We've heard of contractors who've installed, you know, five units in a day they normally would only install five a week," says Megan Herring of the South Carolina Energy Office.  We've heard a lot of retailers with increased sales with items that usually sell a lot slower."

At last check, the State Energy Office reporters only a little over $1 million in rebates are still up for grabs.

But you'll have to act fast.  The rebate program will end when the cash runs out.
