SCRANTON --
A state trooper killed in a crash over the weekend was laid to rest Tuesday in Florence County. His body was brought home to the place he was born and raised.
A bagpiper played, as a horse drawn carriage carried the body of Corporal Kevin Cusack to its final resting place. More than 100 troopers stood in formation as Cusack's family and friends walked to the burial site at Hebron Baptist Church in Coward.
The trooper honor guard carried Cusack's casket to the cemetery.
This past weekend, Corporal Cusack ran his cruiser off of a state highway near Lancaster where he worked. The 45-year-old veteran trooper was on duty at the time.
At Tuesday's service, officers wore black bands over their badges. His pastor and close friend gave remarks at the burial. "I count it an honor to have known this young man," said Dr. Elwood Seamster.
His words moved many to tears.
Corporal Cusack is remembered as a man who loved his job and the people he took an oath to protect. "He counted it an honor to put on that uniform and to be a servant to the people. He counted it an honor to be able to just do something to be able to give back," Seamster said.
His fellow troopers stood stoically during the 21 gun salute and the playing of Taps. They gave a final salute to their friend and colleague.
The services ended with what's called a 10-42 dispatch call. That's the official ending of Corporal Kevin Cusack's tour of duty with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. "All units no response number 20 is 10-42."
Corporal Cusack grew up in Lake City. He leaves behind two teenage daughters and a 10-year-old son.
